Estonia
Estonia, situated in Northern Europe, borders the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Finland and includes 2222 islands.
Nearly 4,000 km of coastline against 650 km of the land border makes Estonia a true lighthouse country. This is proved by the fact that our Kõpu lighthouse is the 3rd oldest lighthouse in the world, that is still in operation.
There are 55 lighthouses and 145 firetanks under the administration of The Estonian Transport Administration, of which 11 lighthouses are open to visitors during summertime: Sõrve, Kõpu, Ristna, Tahkuna, Kihnu, Vormsi (Saxby), Pakri, Ruhnu, Osmussaare, Naissaare and Vilsandi. In addition, there are lighthouses or navigation marks of historical interest that have fallen into disuse but are of interest as maritime history or architectural sites (Laidunina, Kiipsaare, Käsmu lighthouse).
The Estonian Transport Administration does not open lighthouses alone but in partnership with local communities. Visitors can already enjoy cultural or sports events in many of these locations. Hiiumaa and Saare county lighthouses are presented here due to the activity of our Islands DMO which is a founding member of the European Lighthouse Route through the Hiiumaa Development Centre.
The goal is to encourage international cooperation through our cultural route and include more of Estonia's lighthouses on the European Lighthouse Route.
Explorers from land to sea, welcome.
