Ruhnu

In 1877, a distinctive cylindrical tower with supporting inclined struts, a metal lighthouse, was erected on the eastern side of Ruhnu Island in the Gulf of Riga. The lighthouse was designed by engineer Louis Édouard Lecointre and its assembly elements were manufactured in France at the Forges et Chantiers de la Méditerranée shipyard in Le Havre. Upon completion, a lantern equipped with a second-order optical apparatus from Sautter, Lemonnier was installed at the top of the tower. The original lantern was destroyed during World War I and was restored in 1937 according to the design of engineer Ants Niilre. The lighthouse, made of sheet metal, stands 37 meters high from its base. This metal tower, which has been operational for over a hundred years, remains in working condition and is the only preserved lighthouse of its type in the Baltic Sea region.
