Tahkuna

Tahkuna Lighthouse is located at the northern tip of Hiiumaa, on the Tahkuna Peninsula. The construction of the tower began in 1873 and it was assembled from cast iron plates manufactured in France. This lighthouse, innovative at the time with its Gordon system, was completed in 1875 and stands 42.7 meters above sea level - the tallest cast iron lighthouse on Estonian beaches. The lighthouse's light burns during the dark hours year-round and is visible up to 12 nautical miles away (initially up to 18 miles)—all to warn those at sea about our notorious Hiiumadala, Selgrahu, and other shoals. You can climb to the top of the lighthouse via metal spiral staircases. This also leads to an outer balcony, which offers a magnificent view of both land and sea. The lace-like grid of the balcony floor adds a touch of thrill and trepidation, but there is no need to worry—it is sturdy.
