Risban

The Dunkirk lighthouse, also known as the Risban lighthouse, is located at the eastern entrance of the port of Dunkirk, on the coast of the North Sea, in the department of Nord (France). It is built on the ruins of the fort of Risban, a fortification built under Vauban from 1681 to protect access to the port.

The current lighthouse was built by the architect Léonce Reynaud and lit on 1 May 1843. It is part of the first national maritime signalling plan implemented in the 19th century under the impetus of Augustin Fresnel. Over time, the lighthouse undergoes several modernizations. It was electrified in 1885, making it one of the first French lighthouses to use electricity. Damaged during the Second World War, it was restored after 1946.
