Ailly
The Ailly Lighthouse, located on Cap d'Ailly near Dieppe, is the third built at this site. Automated since 1995, it is managed by the Manche Est–Mer du Nord Directorate. The first lighthouse, built in 1775, was decommissioned in 1899 and collapsed due to cliff erosion by 1968. The second, built 90 meters inland, was lit in 1899 and destroyed by German forces in 1944. The current lighthouse, a 16-meter high square tower of Mignac stone with a cylindrical interior, was commissioned in 1958. It features a green-painted lantern with three 1/5 Fresnel lenses, rotating every 20 seconds, and a 250-watt halogen lamp amplified 1,000 times. The optic rests on a 400-kilo mercury bath and is powered by a 24-volt motor. Its focal height is 19.53 meters, and the light reaches 24.5 nautical miles (45 km). Visitors can enjoy panoramic views from the Baie de Somme to Saint-Valery-en-Caux days open to the public (10 times a year).
