Faro de Ajo
The lighthouse, which was inaugurated in 1930, is located on Cabo de Ajo, the northernmost geographical point of Cantabria. From this site, the impressive views are particularly noteworthy: to the east, the estuary of Ría de Ajo; to the west, Cabo Quintres, another prominent headland, as well as the Bay of Santander and, forming a backdrop to the south, the Cantabrian Mountain Range. In recent years, and as part of a municipal initiative to promote tourism, various modifications and improvements have been carried out in the lighthouse area. In 2015, the surrounding area was refurbished with a perimeter fence and pedestrian pathways that allow visitors to stroll through the site. Since that year, the site has been opened to the public, welcoming many tourists and visitors. On the exterior elevation of the lighthouse tower, a distinctive decorative work by the internationally renowned Cantabrian artist Okuda can be admired. |
