Faro Cabo Mayor
Faro Cabo Mayor is the oldest lighthouse in Cantabria and one of the oldest in Spain (1839). Faro Cabo Mayor is one of the most emblematic buildings in Santander and Cantabria. Cylindrical in shape and set on an octagonal base, the tower is built of ashlar stone and rises 30 metres above ground level and 90 metres above mean sea level. Faro Cabo Mayor Art Centre, unique in Spain and Europe, houses the permanent exhibition of Sanz-Villar Collection, an exceptional ensemble of 200 works of art and 2,000 objects and curiosities related to lighthouses, gathered by the painter Eduardo Sanz throughout his lifetime. Guided visits to the lighthouse tower are organised, with schedules and a reservation form available on the website of the Port Authority (www.puertosantander.es).” |
