Pater Noster

Pater Noster Lighthouse is located on the remote island of Hamneskär in Tjörn Municipality, off the coast of Marstrand. The island lies within a protected nature reserve and is home to one of Sweden’s most iconic maritime landmarks. Built in 1868, the lighthouse guided sailors along the hazardous west coast for over a century. Lighthouse keepers and their families lived here for generations in one of Sweden's most exposed locations.

Named after the Latin for “Our Father,” Pater Noster reflects the perilous waters where seafarers once prayed for safe passage. The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1977, after which the site saw periods of limited use and intermittent activity. In 2025, it was designated a state-listed historic building.

In 2020, the former lighthouse keeper’s residence was carefully transformed into the award-winning hotel ‘A home on the horizon’, now bringing new life to the island where cultural heritage, nature, and contemporary hospitality meet.
