Farol do Cintrão

The Cintrão Lighthouse began operation on 28 May 1957. It is located roughly halfway along the northern slope of São Miguel Island. The lighthouse has a tower 14 metres high, at an altitude of 118 metres. It was equipped with a fixed 3rd‑order dioptric drum lens (500 mm focal length), using acetylene gas incandescence with an eclipsed light, and a kerosene lamp as a reserve light.

Gas automation was initiated in 1977. In 1987, photovoltaic panels were installed, allowing the lighthouse to operate on solar energy, while a generator supplied power to the residence and auxiliary buildings during nighttime and limited daytime periods. In 2000, the lighthouse was connected to the public electricity grid and automated with the APCL‑10 system. Water supply to the lighthouse is still provided by a cistern.
