Farol das Contendas

The General Lighting Plan approved in 1883 initially proposed a lighthouse at Ponta de São Jorge, but the 1902 Commission recommended Ponta das Contendas, as it better served the most navigated coastal area of Terceira Island.

The land was purchased in 1926, and construction began in 1928 using stone from nearby fortifications, under the supervision of master builder António Tomaz.

The Contendas Lighthouse was established on 1 February 1934, at Ponta das Contendas, southeast of Terceira Island. The tower is 13 metres high, with an altitude of 54 metres. It was equipped with a rotating 3rd‑order dioptric‑catadioptric lens, using petroleum vapour incandescence, with a range of 20 nautical miles.

The lighthouse was electrified in 1958 and connected to the public power grid in 1998.
