Farol Ponta da Ilha

The Ponta da Ilha Lighthouse was included in the General Lighting Plan approved in 1883, which initially proposed a 2nd‑order apparatus producing a white flash. This view was supported in 1891 by councillor José de Ávila, although the 1902 Commission later recommended a 3rd‑order light showing four white flashes every ten seconds.

Construction only began in 1942, following the purchase of land, and the lighthouse was first lit on 21 July 1946. The tower is 19 metres high, with an altitude of 29 metres. Initially equipped with a 5th‑order optic using petroleum vapour incandescence, it was electrified with generators in 1958. Access by road was established in 1959, and the optic was replaced several times due to deterioration and technological upgrades.

The lighthouse was connected to the public electricity grid in 1993. Further modernisation followed, with new optical systems installed in 2006 and again in August 2022.
