Farol da Ponta Garça

The Ponta Garça Lighthouse began operation on 28 May 1957.It is located on the south coast of São Miguel Island, about 14 nautical miles east of Ponta Delgada. The tower is 14 metres high, with an altitude of 101 metres. It was equipped with a fixed 3rd‑order dioptric drum lens (500 mm focal length), using acetylene gas incandescence with an automatic mantle changer.

The light is eclipsed, with a white sector and a red sector covering the islet of Vila Franca do Campo. The luminous range is 16 nautical miles for the white light and 13 nautical miles for the red light.

The lighthouse was connected to the public water supply in 1957 and electrified with public grid power in 1980, when an EDOLD eclipsor with a 250 W lamp was installed. In 1987, this system was replaced by the SIRIUS system, later substituted in 1988 by the APCL‑10 system. In 2009, communications equipment was installed, enabling access to the Navy Communications Network.
