Farol da Ferraria

Ferraria Lighthouse, at the western tip of São Miguel Island, was first proposed in 1883 and inaugurated on October 22, 1901. The 18-meter tower stands at 107 meters altitude. It was equipped with a 3rd order rotating catadioptric dioptric lens (500mm focal length) and a constant-level lamp, later replaced by petroleum vapor incandescent lighting. In 1946, the optical system was updated. Electrification began in 1957 with DC generators and a 3000W lamp. In 1974, lighthouse chief Bettencourt Leça invented an electric motor to wind the clockwork mechanism. In 1988, it was connected to the public grid, using a 1000W 120V lamp and electric motors. It is now automated with the DF model system.
