Chassiron
A first fire tower, 33 m high, was built in 1685 following the construction of the Rochefort military arsenal in 1666.
The increase in maritime traffic and the modernization of the beaconing system led to the construction of a new lighthouse, which was put into service in 1836.
The last keeper left in 1998. Since then, the lighthouse is fully automated and controlled by the La Rochelle subdivision of the Interregional Directorate of the Sea - South Atlantic.
After climbing the 224 steps, visitors discover a unique 360° panorama. Highest point of the island, it is possible to observe the northern half of the island of Oléron, the ocean, the Pertuis d'Antioche, the Rochelaise coast as well as the islands of Aix and Ré. Without forgetting the mythical Fort Boyard!
On the 1st floor, a museum on the theme of traditional fishing highlights the know-how of the “peasants of the sea” through traditional objects and models.

If you are in any way responsible for one or more lighthouses, you can contact us to have these lighthouses included on this website. The goal is to have as many lighthouses from all coastal nations in Europe placed on the map, so that many visitors can enjoy navigating the map or physically visiting the lighthouse stations.
