Start Point

Perched dramatically on a remote headland in South Devon, Start Point Lighthouse has warned mariners of the treacherous rocks along this stretch of coastline since 1836. Operated by Trinity House, the lighthouse stands on one of the most exposed peninsulas on the English south coast, guiding vessels navigating the busy English Channel.

Designed by renowned engineer James Walker, the white tower rises 28 metres and remains fully operational and automated. The surrounding cliffs and coastal paths offer breathtaking views and excellent opportunities for spotting wildlife.

Visitors can enjoy guided tours of the lighthouse during the summer months, exploring its history, engineering, and the lives of the keepers who once lived and worked in this remote location. Start Point Lighthouse is a shining example of Britain’s maritime heritage.

If you are in any way responsible for one or more lighthouses, you can contact us to have these lighthouses included on this website. The goal is to have as many lighthouses from all coastal nations in Europe placed on the map, so that many visitors can enjoy navigating the map or physically visiting the lighthouse stations.
