Farol do Cabo da Roca

The Cabo da Roca lighthouse is one of the oldest on Portugal coast, forming part of the group of six lighthouses ordered to be built by the Pombaline decree of February 1st, 1758. It began operating in 1772 and is currently the second oldest on our coast. In 1947, a new 3rd order optical device (aero maritime) was installed (500mm focal length), which is still there today. It was connected to the public electricity grid in 1982. The 3000W lamp was replaced by a 1000W halogen lamp. This was replaced in 2009 by an OSRAM HCI-TM 250W/830 WDL metal halide lamp. In 1990 the lighthouse was automated, and the gas production plant was closed. The lighthouse underwent major renovation and maintenance work in June 2008 until August 2009. The lantern and optical apparatus were dismantled for improvement and maintenance. While the major work took place, a temporary lighthouse was kept in operation on the wall next to the meteorological equipment.
