Farol de S. Jorge

The São Jorge Lighthouse, located at Ponta de São Jorge in northern Madeira, was designed in 1948 and began operating on April 12, 1959. It features a 14-meter cylindrical tower with ribs and an annex building, at an altitude of 271 meters. Originally equipped with a large 3rd-order dioptric drum lens (500 mm focal length), its light source was gas incandescence. In 1962, it was connected to the public electricity grid and upgraded to a mixed gas/electric system. In 1986, it was automated with the SIRIUS system, using 12V 50W halogen lamps. In 1995, it was further modernized with the APCL-10 system and 12V 100W halogen lamps, giving it a luminous range of 15 nautical miles.
