Farol da Ponta das Lajes

The Ponta das Lajes Lighthouse, on the southeast coast of Flores Island, was first lit on 10 October 1910. Chosen for its strategic position, it illuminates the southern approaches to the island and the channel between Flores and Faial. The tower is 16 metres high, at an altitude of 99 metres, and was equipped with a 2nd‑order Fresnel lens, originally using oil lighting. Electrified in 1956 and connected to the public power grid in 1990, the lighthouse became fully automated after major refurbishment works completed in 2001.
