Farol da Ponta da Barca

The General Lighting Plan approved in 1883 originally proposed the construction of a 2nd‑order lighthouse at Pico Negro. However, it was later decided to build it at Ponta da Barca, further west.

The Ponta da Barca Lighthouse began operation on 1 February 1930 and is located on the northwest coast of Graciosa Island. The tower is 23 metres high, at an altitude of 71 metres. It was equipped with a rotating 3rd‑order dioptric‑catadioptric lens, using a gas eclipsor as the light source, with petroleum vapour incandescence as reserve.

The lighthouse was electrified with generators in 1958, significantly increasing its range. In the 1980s, the lamp power was reduced. After being damaged by a severe storm in 1978, it was later connected to the public electricity grid in 1999 and fully automated.

In March 2010, the 80th anniversary of the lighthouse was celebrated with exhibitions, visits, and commemorative editions.
