Farol da Ponta da Piedade

The 1883 General Lighting and Buoyage Plan proposed a harbour light at Ponta da Piedade, later adjusted in 1902 to a 6th‑order optic with two white flashes followed by a red. After the transfer of the ruined chapel of Our Lady of Piety and the acquisition of adjacent land, the lighthouse was commissioned on 1 July 1913. It entered service with a 4th‑order rotating catadioptric apparatus showing groups of five white flashes every 10 seconds, powered by a petroleum lamp with clockwork rotation. The tower is 5 m high, at 51 m elevation. On 2 May 1923, the 4th‑order optic was temporarily replaced by a fixed 6th‑order white light; on 15 December, the character changed to occulting (2.5‑second eclipses and 4‑second fixed white). The station was electrified in 1952, fitted with a new electric incandescent system in 1956 with automatic acetylene standby. It was automated in 1983 using a GISMAN system.
