Andenes
Andenes Lighthouse was established in 1859. It is a coastal lighthouse that was constructed to provide landfall for merchant ships travelling to and from the cities of Tromsø and Hammerfest further north.
The tower at Andenes is built of cast iron and lined with brick on the inside. The tower has eight floors up to the lantern room. Narrow and steep wooden stairs run along the inner walls of the tower from floor to floor.
The lighthouse has great historical value and a high degree of originality. The lighthouse has very significant environmental importance as part of the harbor and the settlement in Andenes.
The former lighthouse keeper's residence, outbuildings, and engine house are located a little south of the lighthouse. These buildings have been sold to a private owner.
In 1948, a radio beacon intended for aviation in the area was installed in the lighthouse. In 1978, the radio beacon in the tower was converted to a purely maritime facility, which was in operation until 1986. In 1954, a military air station was established in Andenes, which has been significant for surveillance and security in the north. It was closed in 2018.
Andenes Lighthouse received electric power in 1953. At that time, the light was significantly enhanced with a new lamp. The lighthouse was automated and de-staffed in 1978.
Andenes Lighthouse is land-connected and easily accessible. The lighthouse is open to the public year-round, with guided tours available by appointment.
