Farol Penedo Saudade

The Penedo da Saudade Lighthouse was initially proposed for Nossa Senhora da Victória with a 2nd‑order light, but in 1902 the chosen site became Penedo da Saudade, better located between Cape Mondego and Berlenga. It began operating on 15 February 1912 with a rotating 3rd‑order optical apparatus powered by petroleum‑vapour incandescence and driven by a clockwork mechanism. The 32‑metre tower stands at 55 metres above sea level. The lighthouse was extinguished from 1916 to 1919 during World War I. Its original optic was moved to Cape Mondego in 1921, and a new 3rd‑order rotating lens producing two‑flash groups was installed. Electrified in 1947 with generators, it was only connected to the public grid in 1980, when automation also started. The lamp’s power was reduced from 6000 W to the current 1000 W.
