Farol do Esteiro
The Esteiro Lighthouse replaced earlier red range lights set in Caxias and Porto Côvo in 1878 to guide ships entering Lisbon. After the 1913 decision to move the alignment lights, the Esteiro Lighthouse began operating in May 1914 with a 15‑metre tower at 82 metres altitude and a fixed red 5th‑order lens covering 15°. It was extinguished during World War I. In 1926, red and white stripes were added to the tower. A radio‑beacon house was built in 1949, and from 1950 the lighthouse followed a seasonal operating schedule, later receiving a directional radio beacon. Electrified in 1951, it gained automatic backup systems and several visibility enhancements. Automation arrived in 1981, with remote monitoring from Paço de Arcos, and the lighthouse became unmanned. In 1987 it operated seasonally, and since 1997 it has remained lit year‑round, with a “Q” Racon installed.
