Farol de Sines
The Sines Lighthouse forms part of a project by Pereira da Silva approved in 1870, which also included the lighthouses of Montedor, Leça/Leixões, Aveiro, Cabo Sardão, Cabo Carvoeiro (Algarve) and Ponta de Santo António (Vila Real de Santo António). The project also addressed harbour lighting in 1865 and proposed studies to determine the best locations for lighthouses and port lights.
The lighthouse began operation in April 1880 with a 22‑metre-high tower, at 41 metres above sea level. It was equipped with a 2nd‑order optical lantern using petroleum vapour incandescence with a fixed light. In 1915, the optic was replaced by a 3rd‑order Fresnel lens, and the light became flashing.
The lighthouse was electrified in 1948 and connected to the public power grid in 1950. A radio beacon was installed in 1953. Between 1992 and 1995, the tower was raised by 6 metres, reaching 28 metres in height, and fitted with a new 4th‑order hybrid optic.
